Southern Cape Bonsmara Club Farmers’ Day
On the 14th April the Southern Cape Bonsmara Club held a very successful farmers day with about 60 farmers attending the day at Flip Kleynhans, a commercial member of the club. A speech about how Bonsmara can be used to increase profitability was given by Louis Steyl of Bonsmara SA. Daneel Roussouw from Nedbank did an overview of the current economical climate and what can be expected in the nearby future and Hendrik van Pletzen from Voermol gave some very good tips on feeding of first-calf cows. The practical discussion was handled by Louis Steyl and good examples of stud bulls and commercial cows and calves were used for the discussion. Some examples of Bonsmaras used in cross-breeding systems were also discussed.
The day was well supported, with good topics, tips and advice that was given to the farmers. The focus of the day was to show the commercial farmer the benefit of using the Bonsmara breed. The interest in beef cattle in the Southern Cape is very positive for the industry and it was encouraging to see so many farmers with a passion for their cattle. Thank you to the Southern Cape Bonsmara Club for the effort they put in to promote the breed in the Southern Cape and thanks to Flip Kleynhans for the use of his facilities and animals.
